"The start of a good thing"

Posted by Connal Finlay on

Leonard Cohen is playing on vinyl (of course) in the background of the shop as I write this. Musing and people watching out of our large windows peering out onto the slightly damp but people filled historic street that is O'Connell Street.

We are now nearing the end of week 7 at our new home. The flourish of excitement has not died down on our front or the customer front and I don't expect it will for a long time (hopefully it never will). Both myself and Martin are incredibly grateful for all of the love and support that we are getting from friends, loyal customers and fresh faces alike.

The title to todays musing is a quote from one of my new regular customers. He, like so many, have picked up what a difference a local wine merchant makes to wine. To have someone that can guide you through to the best wine choice for you, not for me or for anyone else but for YOU. In one of our many conversations, thus far, he mentioned that he was always interested in wine and has always drunk wine but has never been excited about it until now. Until he found a friend (dare I say it) in wine that could guide him through the world of wine.

As I keep saying to our customers that this shop is a place not just for wine and spirits to take home but also to explore the world through it's liquid history and range of flavours. First and foremost it is a place for banter. Many people wonder why there are chairs around our large dining-table-of-a-counter, simply put it it is because we wish to have conversations with you about wines or spirits.

It is about sharing stories and our passion as well as learning about your stories and experiences in wine. That is what it is all about, now and forever.

We're working hard on the plans for downstairs and our fine wine room. Both of which will be starting their respective renovations in the next week or so, ready for the end of September.

Watch this space friends! And keep warm!

Our Inception

Posted by Connal Finlay on

The inception of Cahn and Finlay is a long one. Martin Cahnbley and myself, Connal Finlay, have been friends for quite some time now. We are colleagues in the NZ wine trade. Martin is an importer and distributor of wines for his company Planet Wine and I am an importer, retailer, and wine educator.

Whilst we have both worked side by side as importers for awhile supporting each others ventures, we decided mid-2018 to go in and open a shop. This started off as a pop-up shop for the Christmas period and quickly blossomed into the full on retail shop it now is.

We had months of creating dreams of elaborate shelving ideas, stairs, logos, company names and etc. Lots of fun was had, many laughs were had, and plenty of wine was consumed over this process.

About September, we had found our venue in downtown Auckland - a region where we were always aiming for. We had negotiations and presentations meetings over five months with our landlords-to-be. All of a sudden as we were walking around town we wandered up O'Connell Street and saw our, now, location sitting there with a For Lease sign upon its windows. We called the number with the idea to have a nosey and within 15 minutes we were in and looking around. Love at first sight? Perhaps.

Long story short, we cut our ties at the other potential venue and signed on up to our new home of 10 O'Connell Street. Previously a top-end men's suit tailor, now a fine wine shop. A fitting business to pass the baton to in our heritage building.

July 2019 has marked our opening. Almost a year after the initial seeds were sown.

May this be the beginning of something marvellous for wine lovers to unite over. A place for you to come by and browse our extensive collection wines and spirits from across the globe and to ask questions. In time, when our tasting room downstairs is up and running, we shall also be the home to wine tastings, dinners, and wine courses.
